Terms of Service
Summary: Oracle is a local-first AI journal. You own your data completely. We provide the software; you provide the thoughts. We can't see them, and that's by design.
1. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using Oracle The Journal ("Oracle," "the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
2. Description of Service
Oracle is a privacy-first AI journaling application that provides:
- Encrypted local journaling with AES-256-GCM encryption
- On-device AI analysis powered by Llama 3.2
- Dream diary and archetype profiling
- An optional anonymous collective data feature ("State of the Soul")
The Service is provided as a web application hosted on Cloudflare Pages, with AI processing occurring entirely on your local device.
3. Eligibility
You must be at least 16 years old to use Oracle. By using the Service, you represent that you meet this age requirement.
4. Your Account
You may create an account using email/password or Google Sign-In. You are responsible for:
- Maintaining the security of your account credentials
- Safeguarding your Master Password (we cannot recover it)
- All activity under your account
Important: Your Master Password is used to derive your encryption key locally. If you lose your Master Password, we cannot recover your encrypted journal entries. There is no password reset for encrypted data.
5. Your Data & Ownership
You retain full ownership of all content you create using Oracle, including journal entries, dream diary entries, and AI conversation history. We claim no rights to your content.
Because your data is encrypted on your device and we have no access to it:
- We cannot read, analyze, or monetize your entries
- We cannot comply with data requests for content we don't possess
- We cannot recover data you delete from your device
6. The Anonymous Collective (Optional)
If you opt in to the "State of the Soul" feature, you agree to contribute an anonymized archetype profile to our collective dataset. This profile:
- Contains no raw journal text or identifiable information
- Is generated and anonymized on your device before transmission
- Is subject to Differential Privacy noise injection and K-Anonymity (Rule of 5)
- Cannot be traced back to you
You may opt out at any time. Previously contributed anonymous data cannot be identified or removed because it was never linked to you.
7. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Attempt to reverse-engineer the anonymization process to identify other users
- Submit false or manipulated data to the collective feature with intent to corrupt aggregate insights
- Use the Service for any unlawful purpose
- Attempt to compromise the security of other users' encrypted data
- Redistribute or commercially resell the Service without permission
8. AI Disclaimer
The Higher Self AI feature is designed for self-reflection and personal insight. It uses techniques inspired by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Jungian psychology.
Oracle is not a substitute for professional mental health care. The AI does not provide medical advice, diagnoses, or treatment. If you are in crisis or need professional support, please contact a qualified mental health professional or your local emergency services.
9. Open Source
Oracle's source code is publicly available under its open source license. You may inspect, audit, and verify our privacy and encryption claims at any time. Contributions are welcome under the terms of the applicable license.
10. Service Availability
Because Oracle is local-first, core functionality (journaling, AI analysis, encryption) works offline. Cloud-dependent features (authentication, collective sync) require an internet connection and are provided on an "as-is" basis. We do not guarantee uninterrupted availability of cloud services.
11. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law:
- Oracle is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind
- We are not liable for data loss resulting from device failure, browser storage clearing, or lost Master Passwords
- We are not liable for any actions taken based on AI-generated insights
- Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for the Service (if any)
12. Termination
You may stop using Oracle at any time. You may delete your account and all associated authentication data. Your locally encrypted journal entries remain on your device until you choose to delete them.
We reserve the right to suspend accounts that violate these Terms, though given our architecture, we have no ability to access or delete your local data.
13. Changes to Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the Service. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
14. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of competent jurisdiction.
